LIVIN'VINTAGE
It would appear I always liked a crazy "do"
For quite some time now I have been milling over the idea of setting up a profile or blog to do with my various hair....experiments (shall we say)! With some light coaxing from friends, family etc...I'm going to give it a go.
Retro or Vintage styles are a huge source of inspiration for me. I am interested in many aspects of the 1950's (America) not just the hair but also the clothes, the music, the cars the architecture and interiors!!.....I think its safe to say I am a little....taken with the 1950's.
So, I may not be able to have a beautiful 1950's home filled with retro furnishings (pastel pink kitchen etc.) or a beautiful car like the "EDSEL CORSAIR" however, I can endeavour to bring a little 1950's into my life via the hair.
The cars and kitchens will come.....later! Hehe!
So.....the hair!
I consider myself lucky that my job as an Art and Design teacher allows me that little bit of freedom to just do whatever I feel like! (With regards to hair I mean) Up or down, messy or neat, its all more or less acceptable. I worry at times that I've just gone that one step too far...and I am going to get absolutely ripped to shreds! But as long as I wear the hair..and "own it" then....its cool? right?
My pupils do sometimes look at me funny though....but majority of the time they just say "Miss, how do you do your hair"
Victory Rolls
Victory Rolls are where it all began for me. Not difficult to do and only take 5 minutes, this is my equivalent of a last-min ponytail before rushing out the door! (I do understand its a little easier for me as I have naturally curly hair so I just throw up two sections at front and roll them, but if you have straight hair, there is that added extra of having to tong the rest of your hair)
TIPS:Plenty or hairspray, make sure the rolls feel secure on your head before leaving home. And check the weather...if its windy, eh...goodluck with that!

Natural Curls, then pinned up.
"Swirl or Rolled-Quiff"
This updo is also a staple favourite of mine, commonly used when I do not have time to think about doing anything different! Its great as an updo, looks complicated but once you know how, it really isn't.
TIPS: Hairspray, Backcomb roots then smooth over before pinning up. Always check the back of your head in a mirror because...sometimes if your not careful there can be a big "vacant" space on the back of your head. Attempt to space out the pin curls evenly.

Was in major need of colour at that time, but was too broke!
Various Up-do's
Not really sure what category these fall into as they just came about from messing with my hair. Lots of hair twisting and as usual bobby-pins and hairspray.

Retro Rockabilly
Rockabilly hair styles whilst still in the same vein as vintage hairstyles can be that little more...extreme! I always worry that I wont be able to pull off that iconic u-shaped Bettie Page fringe, so, today I gave it a go! It is alot harder to create that U-shape with such a full/long fringe however, it turned out better than I thought it would. Now to pluck up the courage to venture outside with this "do"
The brilliant thing about the fringe is that you can adapt the style, have it as a regular fringe and leave the rest down, or add victory rolls on side, or just create a simple updo. The pictures below document this.
TIPS: Having a medium length fringe would make this style easier, or actually having a fringe cut to a U-shape would just be perfect on its own...however..if your fringe is not long enough you wont be able to do all the lovely vintage hair styles featured at the beginning of this post! That is why I cannot cut my fringe! :(
Lots of bobby-pins, hairspray, medium backcombing and a good bit of time.

Added Victory Rolls on either side, back left loose.
All hair incorporated into victory rolls.
| Or just fringe with simple updo. No victory rolls required! Just Enough! There is a danger of looking like your attending a fancy dress party if you go over the top. By dressing in clothes that hint at a vintage era but are teemed with on trend accessories is probably the best way to avoid the "costume look"...personally I'd love to play dress up everyday! But alas!! its not very practical as a working lady! Here is how I tried to modernise the vintage look! Colour Blocking! This is a modern trend applied to the vintage style, I particularly like this because when my hair is down with side parting, you cannot see the brown streak, however when my hair is in rolls, you cant but see it! Emphasizing the rolls, yet adding a modern quirky twist. High Contrast adds dramatic quality.
